That even top schools settle for “adequate” teaching says to me one of two things:

- that these schools really don’t care about teaching as much as they claim to in their brochures/web pages; or

- that this combo (i.e., excellent teaching and research) is a lot harder to come by than people claim. In which case it seems to me that universities should admit this and create teaching-focused and research-focused tracks for people that truly prefer and/or excel at one or the other.Hopenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2068615175426357203.post-63752513948508966492010-07-13T10:55:10.461-07:002010-07-13T10:55:10.461-07:00Thanks for your comment! Thanks for your comment!prodigal academichttp://theprodigalacademic.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2068615175426357203.post-90988268998909970092010-07-09T00:26:31.992-07:002010-07-09T00:26:31.992-07:00Totally valid point about the inadequacy of studen...Totally valid point about the inadequacy of student evaluations as a measure of teaching quality. In line with what you mentioned, one can also easily imagine some students giving a bad evaluation simply because they weren't spoon-fed or some other reason indicating their own unhealthy expectation.Venkathttp://grippingcell.blogspot.com/noreply@blogger.com
